The shirt that Maradona wore in the 1986 World Cup final returns to Argentina

Thirty-six years after Maradona won the World Cup with Argentina after beating Germany at the Azteca stadium, the iconic jersey he wore in the final match returned to his homeland.

German Lothar Matthäus, who exchanged jerseys with Maradona, donated the shirt to the Argentine embassy in Madrid in August and collector Marcelo Ordás delivered it to the Argentine Football Association (AFA) on Wednesday.

“I want to thank you, Marcelo, for having brought us this armor. An important armor for all of Argentine football. This shirt allowed us to hug each other when we won the title in Mexico,” he said in a release the president of the AFA, Claudio Tapia.

“The value of this armor means a great deal to our country and our history.”

Maradona set up Jorge Burruchaga for the game-winner in the 1986 final in Mexico City as Argentina triumphed 3-2 to claim their second World Cup.

Maradona’s also famous “Hand of God” shirt, which he wore when scoring two of the most famous goals in history against England in the Mexico 86 quarterfinals, sold for a record £7.14 million ($8.01 million) at auction in May.

The shirt is in the Sports Museum in Doha and headlines the “World of Football” exhibit, which will be in qatar until April 1, 2023.
