The Serbian Defense Minister, Milos Vucevic, confirmed this Saturday the deployment of the country’s Army on the separation line between Serbia and Kosovo given the “very difficult situation” that is occurring in the Serb-majority north of Kosovar, the scene on Friday of strong protests against Kosovar Albanian mayors who were trying to take office.
“The situation in Kosovo and Metohija is very difficult,” the minister declared this Saturday, using the name of Serbian historical province used by the Belgrade government for Kosovo, “and the deployment of the Serbian Armed Forces throughout the administrative line is already underway”.
“I hope that the deployment will be completed in the next few hours,” added the Defense Minister and new head of the government party, the Serbian Progressive Party, whose leadership he assumed this Saturday in what is understood as a concession from his predecessor. and the country’s president, Aleksandar Vucic.
The Defense Minister has assured that his country “has no intention of playing war”, but has warned that “Serbia’s red lines were well known” by the Kosovar authorities, referring to Pristina’s decision to take local elections in the north of Kosovo were held in April in the knowledge of the total boycott of the Serb population.
The elections, intended to fill the void left by Kosovar Serb mayors who decided to resign their posts in protest against the Pristina government, ended with the triumph of Kosovar Albanian mayors that neither Belgrade nor the Kosovar Serb parties recognize as legitimate authorities, hence the protests of this Friday.
Vucevic has indicated that, once deployed on the border, the Serbian forces will remain in those positions “as long as necessary until further notice”, according to statements collected by the Serbian channel B92.
