There has been a lot of talk about Starlink, a connection system from SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, that allows to provide network connectivity to remote homes that would not otherwise be able to communicate over the Internet. Until now, the alternative for these homes was a satellite connection, which was expensive and relatively slow by today’s standards.
However, one of the main “buts” that we find with these systems is the use of a base station, something that It forces us to be close to the PoE router that supplies power to the antenna, and therefore limits our positioning in a certain way.. This is something that also happens with the architecture of mobile phone towers.
This is why Elon Musk’s latest announcement is important, as the second generation of Starlink will allow users to connect to this network directly from a smartphone, without the need for base stations that have to be permanently connected to the network at a fixed point.
This, however, is not intended to provide Internet connectivity –although it can do it at 2-4Mbps—but will allow to eliminate coverage dead zones around the world, as it would be in remote areas or even in the sea. It remains to be seen if this would change the landscape of mobile phone use on planes, although there will probably be regulations in this regard in the future.
