The vice-president of the Council of the Russian Federation (Lower House), Konstantin Kosachev, has reported that a group of senators is preparing proposals for the creation of an international court to judge Ukraine.

“I am a convinced supporter of the need to create our own international court on what is happening in Ukraine. I stress that it is not Russian but international,” Kosachev said, Interfax reports.

However, Kosachev has defended the “special military operation”, Russia’s euphemism for war, as a way to counter an alleged aggression by Ukraine and NATO against Russia.

The Russian authorities have previously shown themselves willing to promote this court, in charge of judging Ukrainians for alleged crimes against humanity in the context of the war, which began in February 2022 by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine, for its part, has also taken steps to form an international tribunal to try crimes committed by Russian troops. Ukrainian authorities are moving in this direction hand in hand with the International Criminal Court.
