MADRID 22 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has won the legislative elections held this weekend in the autonomous Iraqi region, according to preliminary results from the electoral commission published this Monday.

According to results from the Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq (IHEC) corresponding to 99.63 percent of the votes, the KDP has achieved more than 809,000 votes. In second place was the other major party in the region, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), with 408,000 ballots, while in third place was the New Generation group, with almost 291,000 supports.

With these data, the PDK will have 39 seats, while UNK will have 23 deputies and New Generation 15. The rest of the seats are divided between six other formations. The participation rate in these elections has been 72 percent, reports the Iraqi Kurdish news agency Rudaw.

“They couldn’t. Thanks to God, with the support of the people and their trust, we achieved it,” the Prime Minister of Iraqi Kurdistan, Masrur Barzani, reacted to the results through a brief message published on his profile on the social network X.

The elections have been held after six years of delays. The region has held six legislative votes since its de facto independence from Iraq in 1992. The first vote was held on May 19, 1992 with the participation of international observers from European countries and human rights organizations.
