June 9 () –
The right-wing Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party of former Prime Minister Boiko Borisov has won Bulgaria’s early legislative elections held this Sunday with around 25.8 percent of the vote, according to exit polls. Turnout at 7:00 p.m. was 29 percent.
The pollster Trend has given this vote estimate, which attributes second place to the liberal coalition We Follow the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB), with 15.5 percent of votes. Very close is the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) – a populist party close to GERB and backed by the Turkish minority – with 14.7 percent.
Fourth place goes to the ultranationalist and pro-Russian Vazrazhdane (Renaissance) party, with 14.2 percent of the ballots, followed by Such a People (TISP), with 6.5 percent. The conclusions of the Gallup study are very similar to those of Trend.
The vote in the elections to the European Parliament has had similar results. GERB has obtained 26.2 percent of votes, followed by PP-DB (15.7 percent), Renaissance (15.4 percent), DPS (11.7 percent), BSP (9.7 percent ) and Such a Town Exists (6.4 percent).
These elections have been called due to the impossibility of forming a stable government with the necessary parliamentary support. Neither Continuemos el Cambio nor GERB managed to form a government after the April 2023 elections. Nor did the socialist Cornelia Ninova achieve sufficient support.
Added to the apathy of voters are episodes of tension related to the war in Ukraine, such as the recent closure of dozens of schools due to bomb threats received by email and telephone, mostly in the capital, Sofia. The acting government accused Russia of being behind what it called a hybrid attack that seeks to cause fear and notoriety.
