MADRID 4 Nov. () –
The president of Moldova, Maia Sandu, called this Sunday for the “unification of society” and has committed to governing for all, in a nod to Russian speakers, in her first statements after achieving re-election in office in the second round of the presidential elections.
“Moldova, today you have emerged victorious. Together, we have demonstrated the strength of our unity, democracy and commitment to a dignified future,” he declared in a brief statement published on his X social network account.
The candidate of the liberal and pro-European Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) commented on the preliminary results of the elections in a press conference in which she celebrated that “the Moldovans have offered a lesson in democracy worthy of being written in the manuals of history.” “Today you saved Moldova,” he said.
Sandu thanked “all” citizens for participating in these elections “regardless of their choice” and especially the diaspora and young people, who would have led a “historic” mobilization. “This means that in their hearts they carry love for their country,” he said.
The president has made repeated calls for unity, has assured that her objective is to guarantee a “better life” and a “decent future” for Moldovans and has committed to being “the president of all”, in addition to addressing a few words to Russian-speaking voters.
“I am committed to being president for all of you. In our choice for a dignified future, no one loses. We may have different points of view, speak different languages, but we all want peace, mutual understanding and a dignified life for our children. This is my main goal for Moldova in the coming years. We need the unification of society,” he declared in Russian.
Sandu has won the second round of the presidential elections held this Sunday in Moldova with 55.03 percent of the votes (913,982 ballots), according to official data corresponding to 98.87 percent of the votes. Thus, he has managed to prevail over the candidate of the Party of Socialists (PSRM), Alexandr Stoianoglo, considered close to Russia, who has achieved 44.97 percent support (747,003).
