The Raspberry Pi Pico W receives a firmware update with Bluetooth support

The Raspberry Pi Pico W is a $6 microcontroller board with an RP2040 chip, a micro USB port, GPIO pins, and support for WiFi 802.11/b/g/n which was first released a year ago, but already at its launch something was missing: Bluetooth support.

While the Raspberry Pi Pico W had Bluetooth hardware, you did not have the support in your firmware to support this short range communication protocol, something you now have, allowing you to communicate with more devices.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation released a version of the Pi Pi SDK with initial support for Bluetooth earlier this year, but now the company says that official support is included in version 1.5.1 of the SDK and the latest version of MicroPython, so long story short, all it takes to add Bluetooth functionality to the board is a software update.

It’s certainly an interesting feature that unfortunately didn’t make it to launch, but in any case, it’s much better late than never when it comes to software/firmware support for these types of hardware-existing scenarios.
