The rainy season leaves 117 dead in Mozambique since October

March 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Minister of Public Works and Water Resources of Mozambique, Carlos Mesquita, reported this Wednesday from the National Assembly the death of 117 people as a result of the heavy rains that have been falling throughout the country since October 2022.

Mesquita has recognized that the impact of the rainfall in this rainy season has been “devastating” since in addition to lamenting the loss of human life, more than 273,000 people have been affected, while a million students have seen their classes interrupted for the destruction of their schools.

Thus, the minister explained that the consequences of the rains have worsened in recent months due to the overflow of dams in neighboring countries after tropical cyclone Freddy.

The Prime Minister, Adriano Maleiane, has also spoken about this matter and has reiterated his government’s condolences to the families of the victims “who have lost their loved ones due to natural disasters,” reports the Mozambican newspaper ‘ Newspaper’

Meleiane has detailed before the Assembly that due to the rainy season about 50,000 homes have been partially or totally destroyed, dozens of medical centers, schools and other infrastructure, more than 11,000 kilometers of roads and some 73,000 hectares of crops.
