The rail network will gradually resume in Greece from March 22

March 14 () –

The Greek Transport Minister, Giorgos Gerapetritis, reported on Tuesday that the country’s rail network will be back on track gradually starting next March 22 after the train accident in which 57 people died.

“It will be carried out in five phases, with an interval of five days between each phase,” Gerapetritis has pointed out, adding that the railway network will be fully inspected before it restarts, as reported by the newspaper ‘Kathimerini’.

Gerapetritis, who is currently replacing the resigned former Transport Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis, has assured that this gradual process of opening the railway lines is “necessary to regain public confidence”.

Throughout the day of this Tuesday it has been known that the previously appointed ex-minister of Transport will finally appear before the Transparency and Institutions Committee of Parliament next Monday after a request by the main opposition party, Syriza, the portal of Ethnos news.

The former minister resigned on March 1 after explaining that he considered it a “duty” to leave office and as “a small gesture of respect” for the people who died “unfairly.” “I believe that the trust placed by citizens in the political system is an essential part of democracy,” said the outgoing minister at the time.

Likewise, in an attempt to return to normality, the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, met on Tuesday with the representatives of the main railway companies to discuss the schedule, as well as additional security measures for the network.

The Tempi train accident has led to massive protests in the streets of several cities and to criticism in the political arena. Hours after the incident, the Minister of Transport resigned and the Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis has promised to take measures so that it does not happen again.
