The PSOE recognizes that Junts demands to enter the Barcelona City Council to support the spending ceiling in the Congress of Deputies. PSC sources explain that the Catalan secessionists are asking to take power in the council, although they assure that this will not happen. There is optimism in the Government. “The negotiation with Junts is going better,” they explain in Pedro Sánchez’s hard core.
The truth is that after the last contact made public in Switzerland between socialists and independence supporters, last month, something has moved. The PSOE and Junts see a real possibility of reaching an agreement, after a transfer, that allows both parties to gain something (time above all). For the socialists, approving the deficit path would be an important victory to move forward with the legislature.
And for Junts, any juicy compensation in return could help them score an equally important goal than that of the Catalan ERC quota, which arrived at the discount to make the socialist Salvador Illa president of Catalonia. That the negotiations are going reasonably well is explained by the threat that Laura Borràs issued this Tuesday, when she suggested that the leader of the PSOE could face a motion of censure that would remove him from power. Nothing could be further from the truth.
