The Prime Minister of the Libyan Unity Government, Abdul Hamid Debeibé, thanked the support given by the Gulf Cooperation Council and the United States in the face of the threat posed by the figure of Fazi Bashaga, also proclaimed head of the Libyan Government by the opposition Parliament of the east of the country.
“Every day, the international position becomes clearer in rejecting the existence of a new transitional phase”, said Prime Minister Dbeibé, referring to Bashaga’s attempts to seize power and redefine the roadmap towards new elections.
The president came to power after the historic 2020 ceasefire that ended a year of fighting between the forces of Tripoli and the east of the country, led by the rebel marshal Khalifa Haftar.
The transitional government was mandated to lead the country to elections last December, but they never took place due to divisions over the rules and the presence of controversial candidates, culminating in the controversial appointment of Bashaga, who has returned the country to the dangerous administrative bicephaly between Tripoli and the east of the country.
In response to the situation, Dbeibé has praised “the role of the United States and all friendly countries for their firm position to support stability in Libya,” he said on Twitter on Saturday.
The final communique from the leaders of the extended format of the GCC + 3 — comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, plus Jordan, Iraq and Egypt — reiterated “support for efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis in accordance with Security Council resolutions and the need to hold presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible, in addition to the prompt departure of all foreign fighters and mercenaries”.
The statement, recalls the ‘Libya Observer’, also reaffirmed “support for the unification of military institutions under the supervision of the UN, expressing its gratitude for the organization of the Libyan constitutional dialogue by Egypt in a way that supports the process politician backed by the United Nations”.
