Al Golani invites Mikati to visit Syria to continue strengthening relations between Damascus and Beirut

The Prime Minister of Lebanon, Nayib Mikati, has spoken by telephone with the leader of the Syrian jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS) and current strongman of the country, Ahmed al Shara (alias ‘Abu Mohamed al Golani’), to address relations bilateral negotiations between Beirut and Damascus following the latest events in both countries.
On the one hand, Lebanon has been the scene of a wave of Israeli attacks against the Shiite militia party Hezbollah that has left more than 4,000 dead; while in Syria a lightning offensive by rebels and jihadists, led by the HTS group, culminated in early December with the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime.
During the call, both addressed the situation on the shared border, an area where, precisely this Friday, a series of altercations occurred that culminated in a Lebanese soldier being injured after a shooting against a group of Syrians at an illegal border crossing. .
Al Golani has assured that the competent Syrian authorities have done “everything necessary to restore calm on the border and prevent a repetition of what happened,” as reported by the Lebanese Prime Minister’s Office in a publication on his official online profile. social
At the end of the call, the Syrian jihadist leader took the opportunity to invite Prime Minister Mikati to visit Syria “to discuss common issues between the two countries” and continue strengthening bilateral relations. The Lebanese Government has not confirmed whether Mikati will travel to Syria.
