MADRID Jan. 21 () –
The Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, expressed this Tuesday his willingness to dialogue with the new United States Administration but has made it clear that he will not accept any concession of sovereignty in the face of the threats reiterated on Monday by the new US president, Donald Trump, who once again expressed his interest in the island.
“We are Greenlanders. We do not want to be Americans,” Egede stressed, in a press conference in which he stressed that “the future of Greenland will depend on Greenland.” The president has acknowledged that Trump’s latest statements have generated a complicated situation, but he wanted to send a message of calm to citizens.
Egede hopes to be able to explain his positions in a direct meeting with United States authorities, while his Government insists that they are the first interested in guaranteeing the security of both the island and the surrounding areas, reports Danish public television DR.
Greenland, with barely 55,000 inhabitants despite being the largest island in the world, depends in political terms on Denmark, a country that controls key issues in terms of security or foreign diplomacy. Since 2009, the territory has the right to declare its independence through a referendum, an objective that the local Executive continues to have in mind.
