MADRID Dec. 30 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Prime Minister of France, François Bayrou, visited the island of Mayotte this Monday for the first time since the scourge of cyclone ‘Chido’ and set the “objective” of completing the reconstruction of the area within a maximum period of two years, a will that the Government also wants to reflect with short-term measures.
Bayrou, initially criticized for not traveling to the archipelago after the emergency, stressed that, apart from the “good words”, what the inhabitants of Mayotte now need are “quick responses” and also “a long-term plan ” which will be known soon, reports the BFM TV network.
“It is not just about rebuilding Mayotte as it was, but about designing a different future,” said Bayrou, who praised on the ground the efforts of the emergency services to alleviate the unprecedented disaster caused by the passage of cyclone December 14.
Local authorities updated the toll of victims on Sunday to report 39 deaths and more than 5,600 injured, despite initially warning of hundreds of potential deaths. The French Prime Minister has acknowledged that there may be “several dozens or hundreds” of deaths, but in any case he wanted to deny “the rumors” that speak of “thousands of deaths.”
