follow the resignations in the Government of Boris Johnson. After the five that have occurred in the last two days, this morning, the British Prime Minister has woken up with three fewer members in his Executive. In recent hours, the Minister for Northern Ireland has resigned, as well as the Secretary of State for the Treasury, the Secretary for Security, the head of Science, the one for Pensions and Education who lasted less than 48 hours in the Government. In total, there are already more than 40 members of the Government who have submitted their resignation. However, Johnson does not seem willing to give up and remains entrenched in Downing Street despite the rebellion in the Executive.
The British minister for Northern Ireland, Brandon Lewis, presented his resignation on Thursday in protest at the continuity of the prime minister in office, Boris Johnson. Lewis, a key minister in Johnson’s cabinet, said he “deeply regretted” leaving the government but was expected to “honesty, integrity and mutual respect”.
“I came out to defend this government both in public and in private,” Lewis told Johnson in his letter. “Nevertheless, Now we’ve passed the point of no return. I cannot sacrifice my personal integrity to defend things as they are now. It is clear that our party, parliamentary colleagues, volunteers and the whole country deserve better.”
Shortly after Lewis’s resignation, the Secretary of State for the Treasury also announced his resignation. “I have argued that he should continue as prime minister many times in recent months, but there is a maximum number of times one can apologize and move on. That point has been reached.”
For his part, the now former Secretary of State for Security, Da called for a change of leadership in the Conservative Party for the good of “the country and confidence in our democracy”, the head of Pensions, Guy Opperman, stresses that “The government cannot function with Johnson in charge” and George Freeman, responsible for Science, speaks of a “constitutional crisis”, saying that he no longer trusts “the leadership of our country, government or party”.
Also the Chief Education Officer Michelle Donelan, has resigned after less than 48 hours in office. Donelan had entered the Government to replace Nadhim Zahawi, but leaves after two days.
