KAMPALA, 20 Apr. (DPA/EP) –
The president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, has refrained from signing the recent anti-LGBT law approved by Parliament within the established deadline and has proposed “improvements” to the text, which would now be under review again in the House.
As reported on his official Twitter profile by Emmanuel Dombo, a deputy from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, the legislation is being reviewed and “improvements” to the text will be proposed after a series of consultations with the president himself.
Parliament approved the text on March 21, which penalizes the mere identification as an LGTBI person, with punishments that can reach life imprisonment and even the death penalty if it is classified as ‘aggravated homosexuality’, in cases in which it is considered that there is no consent or coercion.
Likewise, the law, criticized by the United Nations, as well as by the European Union and by countries like the United States, contemplates that those who promote relations between people of the same sex could face sentences of up to 20 years in prison.
