Tunisian President Kais Saied has opened the door to greater diplomatic representation in Syria, saying there is no justification for Tunisia not to have an Embassy in Damascus.
In a conversation with the Tunisian Foreign Minister, Nabil Ammar, he confirmed that they are discussing the issue with the Syrian State, in statements collected by ‘Mosaique FM’: “We will have an ambassador accredited to the Syrian State, and we do not accept that Syria is split into pieces.”
“The issue of the regime in Syria concerns only the Syrians,” the president has sentenced, “and as for the people’s elections, we have absolutely nothing to do with it.”
It is a new step forward in relations between the two countries, whose foreign ministers spoke by telephone at the beginning of March, expressing the desire of their respective countries to renew bilateral relations and return to “their normal course”, according to the report. In 2012, Tunisia withdrew its recognition of the government of Syrian President Bashar al Assad and expelled the Syrian ambassador from the country, all in protest of unrest during the Arab Spring.
