MADRID 23 Oct. () –
The President of Tunisia, Kais Saied, remarked this Tuesday before the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, that his Government is working to guarantee the return of irregular migrants who are on Tunisian soil to their countries of origin, because it is the main departure country for thousands of people trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe.
“They have addressed the issue of irregular migration and the search for a quick solution within the framework of the Tunisia-Rome process. (Saied) stressed that Tunisia is working with Italy and other European partners to put an end to this abnormal situation and guarantee return of irregular migrants present in Tunisian territory to their countries of origin,” reads a statement from the president’s office published on his profile on the social network Facebook.
Saied and Meloni addressed this issue during a telephone call after the re-election of the Tunisian head of state. “It has been an opportunity to highlight the strength of the relations between the two countries and the common determination to continue developing them,” he added.
The Italian Government has spoken along the same lines, highlighting in a letter on its website that both leaders have reaffirmed the “common desire to strengthen” the bilateral association, especially in matters of migration, in the midst of controversy over the pact between Italy and Albania to send migrants to centers built by the Italian authorities on Albanian territory.
