The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, confirmed this Sunday that they are investigating a “very worrying” leak of secret US documentation on possible Israeli retaliation plans against Iran after the missile attack on October 1.
“The leak is very worrying. There are very serious accusations. The investigation is underway and they will inform me in a few hours. There is a classified level meeting and then another, but we are following it closely,” Johnson said in statements to a program on the American television network .
Johnson added that he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday to “support him.” However, he has stressed that it is not his role to say what the Israeli response should be.
These are ‘top secret’ documents dated October 15 and 16 that were published on the Internet last Friday initially through a Telegram account called Middle East Spectator. They are marked as being viewable only by the Five Eyes, i.e. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States itself and describe Israel’s preparations to attack Iran.
One of them, prepared by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, states that the plan includes Israel moving ammunition. Another text, from the National Security Agency, includes maneuvers by the Israeli Air Force with air-to-ground missiles.
One of the sources cited by has explained that an investigation is underway into who has had access to the Department of Defense document. These types of leaks would automatically trigger an FBI investigation.
“It is true that Israeli tactical plans have been leaked to respond to Iran’s attack on October 1. It is a serious leak,” said the former head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and former deputy assistant secretary of Defense for the Middle East Mick Mulroy.
“Coordination between the United States and Israel could also be compromised. Trust is a key component in the relationship and depending on how the leak occurred, it could be affected,” he added in statements to .
