The president of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, has supported this Tuesday the creation of a Human Rights foundation for North Korea that is within the framework of current legislation.
Kang In, a spokesman for the president, recalled that the foundation in question was intended to be established to help enact the North Korean Human Rights Law that was approved in 2016 by the National Assembly.
“It could not be started since the previous Administration showed a passive attitude and the National Assembly did not recommend any member for the foundation’s board,” he specified.
However, he stressed that Yoon’s government plans to “actively” promote its implementation, according to information from the South Korean news agency Yonhap.
Last week, the presidential secretary for political affairs, Lee Jin Bok, met with the leader of the conservative People’s Power Party to ask for his cooperation in launching the foundation.
Thus, Kang has assured that the president will ask the deputies as soon as possible to propose members to shape the foundation and has stressed that, “if necessary, senior government officials will be appointed first.”
“We believe this is a clear demonstration of the Yoon government’s willingness to play a leading role in improving the human rights situation in North Korea with the cooperation of the international community,” Kang concluded.
