The President of Senegal announces a dialogue with opposition political forces amid political tensions

May 21. (EUROPE PRESS) –

Senegalese President Macky Sall has announced a national dialogue with the country’s various opposition political forces amid political tensions, nine months before the presidential elections in February 2024.

Although former President Abdoulaye Wade has accepted on the condition of carrying out “a contradictory audit of the electoral registry”, most of the opposition, such as Ousmane Sonko, Aminata Touré or Déthié Fall, have refused to appear for the dialogue on May 30. , according to the radio station Radio France Internationale (RFI).

In addition, the opposition has already denounced on several occasions that Sall plans to run for a third term, and on May 13 it called a demonstration against the Senegalese government that was attended by thousands of people. The Senegalese constitution limits the total number of terms to two and an attempt to extend his stay in power could lead to instability.

For his part, the Senegalese president recently rejected allegations about the possibility of violating the two-term limit should he run for reelection, stressing that “in the legal field, the debate has been closed for a long time.” However, he specified that he has not yet decided if he will run for the polls again.
