The President of Portugal cancels trips after an illness that led him to be admitted to the hospital

July 7 () –

The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has canceled his upcoming trips after being discharged from the hospital where he had been admitted after fainting during an official act.

Sources from the Portuguese Presidency have confirmed to the Lusa news agency that trips to Porto and Aveiro on Friday and to Tomar on Sunday have been canceled as a precaution.

However, unlike the trips outside Lisbon, the president has held the meetings he had scheduled at the Belém Palace.

The head of state fainted on Wednesday at the end of a visit to the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon. Rebelo de Sousa was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he was hospitalized for several hours for observation.

After a series of tests, he was discharged and left the hospital on his own. Speaking to journalists after hospitalization, he reported that he had a similar illness in 2018 in Braga, which was due to a sudden drop in blood pressure.

The Portuguese president said that he did not stay in the hospital because the analyzes “were clearly positive”: “I feel good,” he added, as reported by the aforementioned agency.
