The president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, visited this Friday the victims of cyclone ‘Chido’, which has left at least 75 dead and more than 700 injured in the African nation, especially in the northern provinces of Cabo Delgado and Nampula.
“Our coming is more to show solidarity with you, the grieving families, but above all to experience the problem. It is one thing to hear it and see it in the media, but experiencing the problem in real life is different,” the president stated. in statements reported by the Mozambican state news agency.
During his visit to the shelters in the Mecúfi district, in Cabo Delgado, Nyusi expressed his solidarity with those affected and assured that the Government will implement strategies to support the urgent recovery of the affected areas.
“I think that support never reaches everyone in these types of moments, but the information we have is that food support is arriving, and we are making an effort to maintain this pace,” he said.
Among the priorities, he highlighted food security and the reconstruction of homes, warning about the risks posed by the expected rains in the coming weeks.
According to the latest data from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction, so far there are 75 deaths, 768 injured and one missing.
Likewise, the cyclone has destroyed 39,133 houses and damaged another 13,343, as well as 250 schools and 52 health facilities affected.
