Oct. 7 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, defended this Thursday the need for the European Union to spread the values of peace and democracy throughout the world at a time of special relevance after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing the ” bravery” of the young Iranian women who demand “freedom and rights”.
“Our ability to ensure stability and to bring it around the European Union, to the regions that surround us, to the Near East and the Middle East, will be measured by the coherence that we will know how to maintain in defending the values (of peace and democracy) as demonstrates these days the courage of young Iranian women to claim freedom and rights,” Mattarella said at the United for Europe forum held in Malta.
In this sense, the Italian head of state has pointed out that it is an “unrepeatable responsibility” of the countries of the Union to find solutions that guarantee security and stability for the entire European continent, according to a statement from the Italian Presidency.
To this end, he has asked for the instruments available to the European Union to consolidate the strategic autonomy of the Twenty-seven to be defined, a “necessary” milestone in light of “the unacceptable and very serious aggression” by Russia against Ukraine and the serious consequences that it has entailed.
“It is up to the Union to define a foreign policy that acts as a safeguard of our freedom, a common defense policy and a spirit of coherence of full complementarity with NATO, capable of covering ever broader areas”, added Mattarella.
“The values of peace, democracy, the rule of law are founding principles of our society and of the European integration process, and are placed in antithetical terms to what emerges as a consequence and as principles and criteria of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine”, added, according to the letter from the Italian Presidency.
