The president of Israel conveys his support to Netanyahu to successfully complete the new peace proposal

June 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of Israel, Isaac Herzog, declared this Sunday his full support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to successfully complete his peace proposal for Gaza that the US president, Joe Biden, detailed last Friday in the midst of the threats from the far-right sector of the Israeli government coalition.

The two top ultra representatives of the Government, ministers Itamar ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, threatened yesterday to leave the coalition if Netanyahu ended up agreeing with Hamas to end the war in Gaza following the terms of the detailed proposal with Biden, one that does not contemplate openly defeats the Islamist movement and instead advocates a sustained ceasefire.

“There is no greater duty than to secure the return of the hostages,” Herzog declared during an appearance at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. “Our obligation is to guarantee their return within an agreement that preserves our security interests,” he added in statements reported by the ‘Times of Israel’.

“You have my full support for any plan that achieves the release of the hostages,” Herzog added.

Although Netanyahu has clarified that the proposal is at the expense of the political and military defeat of Hamas, his ultranationalist allies have perceived that the agreement does not mark this issue as a priority. White House sources indicated last Saturday that Biden has privately asked Netanyahu not to give in to this kind of pressure and focus on completing the agreement.

Also this past Saturday, the leader of the Israeli opposition, Yair Lapid, offered the prime minister political support in the event that Ben Gvir and Smotrich decide to leave the coalition. “I remind the prime minister that he will find a safety net in us if that happens,” he said in a message posted on his X social network account.
