The President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, admitted this Wednesday that the country’s security forces have committed “serious violations of Human Rights” throughout history and has demanded reparation for the victims and the restoration of their rights. .
“With a clear mind, as the head of state of Indonesia, I admit that serious violations of Human Rights have taken place and I deeply regret these events,” he asserted after receiving a report carried out precisely by a team created with the aim of addressing the historical memory of the country.
In this sense, he has recalled at least a dozen events dating back to the 1960s and ranging from the abuses perpetrated under the regime of former President Suharto to the violence carried out by the Army against the indigenous populations of the province of Papua, according to information from the television channel Kompas.
“I feel great sympathy for the victims and their families. For this reason, the Government and I are trying to restore and repair their memory in a fair way, without denying the judicial processes,” he pointed out.
The words of the Indonesian president, also known as Jokowi, mark a change in position on the part of the government vis-a-vis previous administrations as victims face slow judicial processes to get their cases forward.
“I promise to guarantee that this type of violation never happens again,” he asserted before stating that the government “is taking steps to fulfill this promise.”
