The president of Hungary, Katalin Novak, has urged the deputies on Wednesday to ratify “as soon as possible” the protocol of accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO given the current situation regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

As the Parliament debates several motions in this regard after months of bills to unblock the matter, the Hungarian president has indicated that “it is a complex decision with serious consequences, so it is necessary to consider it with caution”.

However, he has said that his position is clear. “In the current situation, the access of these countries is justified. I trust the National Assembly and its decision-making capacity so that this measure is introduced as soon as possible,” he asserted, according to a message posted on his Facebook account. .

Hungary and Turkey are the only members that have not yet ratified the entry of these two countries. Previously, the Hungarian authorities had repeatedly delayed the vote, alleging that the government had no intention of “putting pressure on Ankara”, with whom talks are currently stalled given its refusal to join if the two countries do not meet the requirements. agreed in June during the summit held in Madrid.

The rest of the Member States signed this document for the inclusion of Sweden and Finland on July 5, 2022. The process to join NATO will be completed when all States ratify the protocol.
