MADRID 30 Oct. () –
The president of Georgia, Salomé Zurabishvili, refused this Wednesday to respond to the summons of the Prosecutor’s Office after opening an investigation into the “alleged falsification” of the parliamentary elections after the victory of the Georgian Dream government party.
Zurabishvili has pointed out that in any investigation it is the investigating body that must provide the evidence and not the other way around, which is why he has urged the Prosecutor’s Office to do its job instead of carrying out “political maneuvers” against him.
“Non-governmental organizations, observers and ordinary citizens have presented enormous amounts of evidence that appears daily and increasingly shows how large and systemic electoral fraud has been,” he said in statements to the press.
Likewise, he has joked that the Prosecutor’s Office should also summon the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, to present evidence of electoral fraud. “Everyone has their own job,” he reiterated.
Zurabishvili has also stressed that the summons coincides with the words of the former Russian president and current vice president of the Russian Security Council, Dimitri Medvedev, who assured that the Georgian president should be prosecuted for provoking unrest in the country.
The Prosecutor’s Office has summoned the president for this Thursday considering that it has evidence about the “possible falsification” of the elections after the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) denounced “unfounded accusations” about the management of the process.
This announcement comes after thousands of people demonstrated this Monday in the streets of the capital, Tbilisi, in a call by the opposition and Zurabishvili to denounce fraud in the elections and demand a repeat election.
In addition, the European Union and the United States have even called for a “thorough” investigation into reports of irregularities denounced by observers championed by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), while the Georgian Prime Minister, Irakli Kobajidze has rejected criticism and defended the victory of his party, Georgian Dream.
