May 28. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Finnish president, Alexander Stubb, stated this Monday that Finland will recognize Palestine as a state “at some point” in the future on the occasion of formal recognition by Spain, Ireland and Norway starting on May 28.
Stubb, who made these statements during a press conference in the Estonian capital, Tallinn, where he is on a three-day state visit, said that Helsinki “is neither on the side of Israel nor of Palestine, but on the side of peace and supports a two-state solution.
This is the reason why Finland “has not yet announced its recognition of the State of Palestine, but will do so at some point,” according to statements reported by the Finnish television network Yle.
The three European countries that will make effective at the same time the decision to recognize the Palestinian State have stressed that this step is “justice” and “the best guarantee of security” for Israel, apart from something “indispensable” to achieve peace in the region.
The Israeli response was practically immediate: the call for consultations of its ambassadors in these three countries and the summoning of its ambassadors in Tel Aviv to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
