The president of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Déby, has stressed that “the war against Boko Haram is legitimate” and has defended the actions of the Armed Forces in launching a new operation in the Lake Chad basin after a recent attack by the group that It left at least 40 soldiers dead.

“The war we are carrying out against Boko Haram is legitimate. The Chadian soldier is a man of honor and does not back down from the enemy,” said the president, who has been in the area for more than a week leading the ‘Haskanite’ operation. launched in response to the aforementioned terrorist attack against a base in Barkaram.

Thus, he stressed that the group must know that “its hours are numbered” in the Lake Chad basin. “We are not going to give up a single centimeter of our national territory,” he stated, according to a statement published by the Chadian Presidency through its account on the social network Facebook.

The authorities of the African country have carried out several bombings in recent days against alleged targets of the group, while Déby has ordered troops to begin land and maritime operations on the islands of the lake, where Boko Haram has various positions.

The area has been the scene of attacks in the past by the terrorist group Boko Haram and its splinter group, Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA), which operate in the Lake Chad area, located on the border between Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon. The authorities of these countries generally use the term Boko Haram to refer to both factions.
