The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has urged Armenians living in the Nagorno Karabagh region to adopt Azeri nationality or, on the contrary, leave the area and “find another place to live”.
As Aliyev has defended, the Azeri authorities are providing “total freedom” to the Armenian population of Nagorno Karabagh to make such a decision. “This problem must be resolved on the basis of Human Rights”, he has stated.
“We have repeatedly declared that we will not discuss our internal affairs with any country. Karabakh is our internal affair,” the Azeri president asserted in statements to the Azerbaijan Television network.
The two countries have been involved in various confrontations in recent years over the control of Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory with a majority Armenian population that has been the focus of conflict since it decided to separate in 1988 from the Azerbaijan region integrated into the Soviet Union.
