The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, announced that he will not seek re-election

( Spanish) — The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, announced this Friday that he will not seek re-election in the general elections that the South American country will hold in October.

The president communicated his decision through an almost 8-minute video published on his social networks, in which, in addition, he toured what were his four years in government.

“Since I began to be a political soldier in the 70s, I never put personal ambition before the need of the group. As a Peronist militant I always knew that the Homeland came first, then the movement and lastly, the men. That is why I am going to comply with this scale of priorities,” says Fernández in the video.

Likewise, he said that “the PASO are the vehicle for society to select the best men and women from our front who best represent us in the next general elections. As president of the Justicialista Party, I am going to guarantee that all those who feel trained to face this challenge can do so”.

“We need to generate a new virtuous cycle in which others are empowered to win back the hearts of those who continue to see us as the space that guarantees that the right will not return to bring us its nightmare and its darkness,” the president continued.

Fernández, who assumed the presidency of Argentina on December 10, 2019, had previously been the country’s chief of staff between 2003 and 2008, during the government of Néstor Kirchner and the first of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, current vice president of Argentina.

The ruling coalition, the Frente de Todos, has not yet defined its presidential candidates, and now, after Alberto Fernández’s announcement that he will not run, the big question is whether Cristina Fernández de Kirchner will be a candidate. Although her ex-president publicly said that she would not be, there are sectors within her force that seek to convince her to review that decision.

The presidential elections in Argentina will be held on October 22, while August 13 is the scheduled date for the open, simultaneous and mandatory primaries.

If necessary, the second electoral round will be held on November 19.
