MADRID Dec. 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of Algeria, Abdelmayid Tebune, announced this Wednesday that he has granted presidential pardons to a total of 2,471 people, within the framework of the celebration of New Year’s Day and less than two months of granting pardons to 4,000 prisoners.
According to a statement from the Algerian Presidency published on its Facebook profile, this measure represents a total pardon of the sentence for people who are not deprived of liberty and have been sentenced to a sentence of less than or equal to 24 months; or those deprived of liberty whose sentence is less than or equal to 18 months.
In addition, it includes a partial reduction of 18 months for prisoners whose remaining sentence is greater than 18 months and equal to or less than 30 years. Likewise, this period will be extended to 24 months for detainees whose age is equal to or greater than 65 years, minors, pregnant women and mothers of children under three years of age.
However, the pardon presents exclusions for those convicted of serious crimes. It also benefits 14 people detained for crimes related to public order, and another eight people who are in preventive detention or pending trial.
Less than two months ago, on November 1, Tebune signed two presidential decrees that provided for a pardon for 4,000 people on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the start of the War of Independence (1954-1962), a conflict that ended with the independence of the country of its metropolis, France.
