MADRID Nov. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of Algeria, Abdelmayid Tebune, signed two presidential decrees this Thursday that provide for a pardon for 4,000 people on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the start of the War of Independence (1954-1962).
The first decree refers to pardon measures for those definitively convicted in common law cases and the second decree refers to cases of disturbance of public order, as reported by the Algerian news agency APS.
On the occasion of the anniversary, Tebune has received several heads of state from neighboring countries, such as his Tunisian counterpart, Kais Saied, the Mauritanian, Mohamed Uld Ghazuani, or the head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi. The leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, has also attended.
The date of November 1 is loaded with symbolism, since this day commemorates the beginning of the War of Independence in 1954, a conflict that ended in 1962 with the independence of the country from France, the metropolis.
