The president of Algeria, Abdelmayid Tebune, defended this Tuesday the role of the Army and advocated facing the existing “challenges” to “consolidate the foundations” of the rule of law, within the framework of a military parade on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of independence from France.
Tebune highlighted during the act that the country is going through “a stage in which the contours of an Algeria that trusts in its future are being drawn” and has underlined that the act gives “an exceptional seal” to the celebrations. Likewise, he has pointed out that “everyone, whatever their level of responsibility” must address “a situation strewn with challenges” to “consecrate the spirit of citizenship and the values of solidarity”.
Thus, he stressed that these acts must be “milestones that bear witness to fidelity to the martyrs and the glorious legacy of November” and reaffirmed his support for the Army as heir to the National Liberation Army. “We all fiercely defend his enormous successes and achievements,” he said, according to the Algerian state news agency, APS.
“In these highly symbolic moments, the Algerian people confirm the high level of professionalism and mastery of military sciences and techniques on the part of our solid Army,” said Tebune, who emphasized that the Armed Forces “are cohesive with the village”.
Lastly, he applauded the “brave soldiers deployed on the borders and in the skies to protect airspace, as well as the guardians of maritime space”. Tebune has further noted that these celebrations are “the flame of glory in the sky of Algeria and the torch of pride in its pure land”.
The parade took place in the Algerian capital, Algiers, and was attended by various foreign leaders, including the leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, and the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmud Abbas. The leaders of Tunisia, Congo, Niger and Ethiopia have also been present, as well as the president of the African Union Commission, Moussa Mahamat Faki.
Ghali congratulated Tebune on the 60th anniversary of Algerian independence and highlighted the “long and stormy trajectory of struggle in which the heroic Algerian people carved, with golden letters, one of the most luminous pages of the history staining its national soil with the pure blood of its glorious martyrs”, as reported by the Saharawi news agency SPS.
In this sense, the president of the self-proclaimed Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) has praised that the Algerian people have maintained “130 years of struggle against colonialism, especially since the beginning of the November 1 Revolution, which opened the horizons of freedom and emancipation to the peoples and countries of the region and the world”.
