The start of the electoral campaign is already leaving its first bombastic proclamations by the candidates. In the rally that the president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, stars in Toledo today, at the Puerta de Bisagra, the candidate of this party for the city council, Carlos Velázquez, has come up. He has compared his candidacy with what King Alfonso VI did when expressing his desire to “reconquer Toledo.”
It thus went back to May 1085, “when Alfonso VI crossed the Bisagra gate, to put an end to 300 years of Muslim rule and to begin one of the brightest and most splendid times that would end up turning Toledo into a city of the cultural knowledge”.
And from there, he winked at Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Paco Núñez for their own ‘reconquest’ of the governments of Spain and Castilla-La Mancha, respectively. “If more than 900 years ago the reconquest of Toledo was not only the capture of a city, but its consequences and its positive repercussions spread throughout the Kingdom, today we can say that recovering and reconquering Toledo will also have positive repercussions in the Diputación , in the Junta and we will govern in Spain”.
“I want us to go back to being one of the most important cities in the West”
You have highlighted the history, heritage or geographical position of Toledo due to its proximity to Madrid. We are The Imperial City, we have been one of the most important cities in the West and I want it to be like that again. That’s why we’re going to win the elections.” “They are not 300 years, but 16 years of socialist government and they are too many,” recalled the candidate, those that the PP has been out of the municipal government. Then he has launched into singing, chanted by the attendees. “We are going to win, we are going to win.”
He has made ugly the mayoress and PSOE candidate, Milagros Tolón, who does not want to debate with him and has asked for the vote “to open a new stage in Toledo” and have “a serious government, without labels that governs for everyone.” He has also said that he has a “clear and defined” city project and in this sense he assured that “I want to lead a government that listens to its neighbours, that is going to correctly invest the money that comes from Europe and that does not lose opportunities for not knowing how to process European funds”, said Velázquez.
“We will make history in Toledo again as we did more than 900 years ago,” he concluded, returning to his initial idea of the Christian reconquest.
