The Portuguese Judicial Police has ruled out this Wednesday that the attack perpetrated on Tuesday by an Afghan citizen in an Islamic center in Lisbon had terrorist motivation and, instead, points to an attack of a “common nature”.
The director of the body, Luís Neves, has also ruled out that there was a background of religious radicalization, after following the track of the alleged attacker from Afghanistan to Portugal, passing through Greece. “There is no indication” in this regard, he has qualified, according to the RTP chain.
The suspect, killed by the Police after killing two women inside the Ismaili Center, remains admitted to a hospital. Neves has confirmed that he has already been questioned and, although he has not wanted to go into details, he has explained that he has been sorry.
The Prime Minister, António Costa, also stated on Tuesday shortly after the event that it appeared to be an “isolated incident”, a term that the office of the president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, also noted in its first reaction.
