Prime Minister Donald Tusk has applauded the result of the vote, arguing that what is at stake has less to do with medicine than with human rights. Thus, he has advocated working so that women “do not feel that they are targets of attacks” and have the right to decide about their own bodies, according to his office.
Tusk admits the road to final approval will be “difficult.” Not in vain, the reform has already generated controversy within the majority led by the Civic Coalition and in the final stretch of the journey is the president, Andrzej Duda, an ally of the Freedom and Justice party (PiS) and with the power to veto the text.
Currently, Poland has one of the most restrictive regulations in Europe on abortion, with a system of assumptions that only authorizes the termination of pregnancy in cases of rape or when the life or health of the pregnant woman is in danger. The pressure in this area was further tightened following a ruling by the Constitutional Court.
