The Polisario Front rejects that the UN peace process is "an attempt to legitimize the illegal military occupation"

19 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Polisario Front has rejected this Tuesday the peace process led by the United Nations, affirming that it would become an “open attempt to legitimize the illegal occupation”.

The leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, has condemned the “ominous silence” of the UN “in the face of the flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement by Morocco”, as well as its occupation of the territory of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). ).

Likewise, he regretted that the UN Security Council “has failed to appreciate the sacrifices and concessions of the Saharawi party and its continuous and stable willingness to cooperate constructively with the United Nations to resolve the conflict.”

“It is time for the UN to honor its principles for which it was founded: preserving peace and establishing justice is the only way to restore the credibility of the Saharawi people in international institutions”, Ghali declared.

For this reason, the Polisario Front has reiterated that this conflict must be resolved “exclusively by allowing the Saharawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.”

The former Spanish colony was occupied despite the resistance of the Polisario Front, with whom it remained at war until 1991, when both parties signed a ceasefire with a view to holding a self-determination referendum, but differences over the preparation of the census and the inclusion or not of Moroccan settlers has so far prevented its call.

On November 14, 2020, the Polisario Front declared the ceasefire with Morocco broken in response to a Moroccan military action against Saharawi activists in Guerguerat, in the agreed demilitarized zone, which meant for the Saharawis a violation of the conditions of the Stop the fire.
