There are many ways to play the main series titles from Pokemon. Although with each installment The Pokémon Company usually implements novelties in terms of game mechanics and gameplay, there are some players who impose their own challenges. It has just come to light that The Pokémon Company supposedly considered a challenge the same as a hack or ROM and almost fired 2 Nintendo employees for trying to spread them.

The story below gave a lot to talk about in the community of Pokemon. If you’re a member, you probably know what Nuzlocke is, if not, we’ll explain that it’s basically a game with rules imposed by the player himself, which make it more complicated, such as getting rid of Pokémon that lose all their health points, capturing only 1 species per route and not capture it again, etc.

You don’t have to be knowledgeable about hacks or mods to identify that this isn’t a hack or ROM, but apparently The Pokémon Company didn’t know that.

The Nuzlocke of Pokemon is it a hack or rom?

We say this because in the latest Kit & Krysta video both hosts, former Nintendo Minute employees and Nintendo PR managers, revealed a very strange story.

When asked if they have played a Pokemon with Nuzlocke, both content creators revealed that for a Nintendo Minute they both approached The Pokémon Company to play a Pokémon title with Nuzlocke, but got an unexpected and unwelcome reaction from the company.

Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang thought it would be a “fun idea”, but The Pokémon Company, as if they had desecrated something sacred, let them know that they consider “this to be on the same level as hacks and ROMs”, obviously for surprise of both; in fact, they were so shocked that they thought they were going to be fired.

“You can see why people are afraid to come up with what seem like basic ideas, because there was such an unpredictability of ‘Am I going to get in big trouble for suggesting this?'” Kit said.

“And it happened to us,” Krysta said. “Once you get into trouble, they don’t want to trust you again, as you lose merit,” to which Kit added that it’s better not to do or propose anything.

As if that were not enough, Yang assured that “a lot of creators who played with the style of Pokémon Nuzlocke were deleted from their creator program”.

Is The Pokémon Company against the Nuzlocke?

This last statement in particular caused a controversy in the community of Pokemonsince it is normal for many content creators to play Pokémon titles in this style and are affiliated with The Pokémon Company.

Shortly after this was revealed, Joe Merrick, Pokémon expert and head of Serebii, contacted The Pokémon Company to ask for their position on the matter.

“We have no problem with fans/creators playing games with Nuzlocke rules,” The Pokémon Company said.

In case you missed it: Kit Ellis stopped Nintendo from causing a controversy at EVO 2014.

The latter would refute Yang’s statement, but with the few details it is impossible to know what happened for sure, so one can speculate.

Perhaps at the time The Pokémon Company (or the person Kit and Krysta talked to) didn’t know what a Nuzlocke was and thought it was an unofficial program in the games or an item randomizing the game unofficially, which is why the company reacted this way.

The Nuzlocke challenge itself is within the rules of the game; however, there are also hacked programs that include Nuzlocke modes, so there is a possibility that The Pokémon Company considered everything Nuzlocke-related for this reason. Obviously, the company would not then want a Nintendo channel to talk about it, since it would lead some viewers to be interested in this and discover unofficial programs.
