The Palestinian government asks the UN Security Council for “measures that guarantee the non-repetition of violations”

The secretary of the Executive Committee of the Organization for the Liberation of Palestine (PLO), Hussein al-Sheikh, has stressed that the position of the international community on the Mosque Esplanade is “clear and explicit” and has charged Israel for “trying to change the ‘status quo'”.
“International statements before the Security Council (of the UN) are clear and explicit about the Al Aqsa mosque and the attempts to damage it and change the ‘status quo,'” the Sheikh has stated through his account on the network social Twitter.
Thus, it has stressed that these statements “contain a message to the occupation government about the dangers of its policies and actions, while making it responsible for the increase in tensions and the repercussions of these policies towards the holy places and towards the sacred Al Aqsa Mosque in particular”.
Along these lines, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry has applauded the position of the member countries of the UN Security Council and has stressed that they have “clearly affirmed the rejection of the change in the historical, legal and political status” of the holy places in Jerusalem. .
The ministry has reiterated that the recent visit to the site by Israel’s Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir was “a provocation” aimed at changing the ‘status quo’, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.
For this reason, it has asked the UN Security Council to “turn its positions into action” through “measures that guarantee the non-repetition of the violations carried out by Ben Gvir and his followers to guarantee that the ‘ status quo’ of Muslim and Christian (Jerusalem) holy places”.
The ‘status quo’ prevents Jews from praying in the place and only authorizes them to visit the place at predetermined times and to travel through it through a fixed route, accompanied by policemen who must ensure that the faithful do not pray or that they introduce Israeli flags or religious objects.
Israel took control of the Temple Mount and the rest of the Old City of Jerusalem during the Six Day War (1967). However, it allowed Jordan to continue to maintain religious authority at the site and, under the peace agreement, recognized Jordan’s “special role” over “Muslim holy places in Jerusalem.”
Israel considers Jerusalem its “indivisible” capital, although the status of the city is pending a peace agreement with the Palestinian authorities, who claim East Jerusalem as the capital of a state on the 1967 borders as part of a peace settlement. two states backed by the international community, which also calls for no changes to the ‘status quo’.
