The Philippine authorities have denounced this Saturday the entry of a Chinese Coast Guard vessel ‘CCG 5901’, the largest of its type in the world, into its exclusive economic zone in the Masinloc shoal or Scarborough bank.
The data reveal that the vessel, 165 meters long, carried out this “intrusive patrol” accompanied by the ‘CCG 5203’ vessels, 102 meters long.
‘CCG 5901’ has a displacement of 12,000 tons and is armed with heavy machine guns. It also has a heliport and a hangar with capacity for helicopters.
This same Friday, the Philippines reported the installation of a new Philippine Coast Guard surveillance post to improve security in the area and in response to Chinese “military reinforcement” near Taiwan.
China and the Philippines have seen an increase in incidents over the past year in the disputed waters of the South China Sea, especially around Second Thomas Atoll and Masinloc Shoal. Other countries such as Brunei, China, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam also claim sovereignty in some areas of these disputed waters.
