The Paris Police will "protect" the Constitutional Council before its opinion on the pension reform

13 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Paris Police has promised to “protect” the headquarters of the Constitutional Council in a new day of strike that precedes the judicial ruling, on Friday, on the pension reform promoted by the Government and the president, Emmanuel Macron.

The authorities foresee that the influx in the demonstrations this Thursday will be less than in previous strikes -with between 400,000 and 600,000 attendees-, although they fear that new incidents will occur. In Paris alone, it is estimated that there may be up to a thousand potentially violent people.

The prefect of the Paris Police, Laurent Nunez, explained this Thursday on the RMC radio station that there are strategic points that will be “protected” in a particular way by the security forces. “Obviously, this will be the case of the Constitutional Council and other sensitive sites on the itinerary” of the march, he said.

The Council is called upon to rule on whether the pension reform, which raises, among other measures, raising the retirement age from 62 to 64, conforms to the Constitution. The court’s decision, which may overthrow part of the new law, will predictably mark the future of some mobilizations that began in January.

This Thursday, the twelfth day of strikes has started with new transport problems, although without serious incidents. The unions of the Paris garbage sector have also started a new strike, after the previous strike, which lasted about three weeks, left 10,000 tons of waste uncollected on the streets of the capital.
