The outgoing president of Georgia tells the EU that "the only peaceful solution to the crisis" is new elections

MADRID Dec. 16 () –

The president of Georgia, Salomé Zurabishvili, assured this Sunday the president of the European Council, António Costa, that “the only peaceful solution to the crisis” in the country, after the indirect election of her successor, the former footballer and politician Mijail Kavelashvili, is the call for new elections.

“Tonight I spoke with Costa about the latest events in Georgia. I stressed that the only peaceful solution to the crisis is political: through new elections! He assured me that the European Union will continue to support the Georgian people and their European future “, he expressed through his profile on the social network X.

The Georgian opposition, which has received the support of the pro-European Zurabishvili, has confronted the Government of Irakli Kobajidze with demonstrations in the streets in protest of the legislative elections alleging fraud. The president announced that she will remain in power after declaring the vote for the new president illegitimate, which has been boycotted by the opposition.

This conversation takes place on the eve of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, which includes among its agenda items Georgia’s candidacy for the community bloc and cooperation within the framework of the Eastern Partnership. Likewise, the Russian invasion of Ukraine or the situation in the Middle East, especially in Syria and Lebanon, will be addressed.
