The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is “closely” following the evolution of the situation in Syria in the face of the rebel and jihadist offensive that has caused the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime and has considered it “of the utmost importance” that the security of the facilities and the chemical arsenal is guaranteed at all times, to avoid risks.
The Al Assad regime collaborated with the OPCW to eliminate at least part of its arsenal, after forces loyal to the Government were accused of using prohibited weapons in the middle of the war. In the face of the impending “political transition”, the organization aspires to “clarify discrepancies and inconsistencies” with respect to official reports.
He has “serious doubts” that Al Assad would fulfill his promise, so there may be “significant quantities of chemical weapons” without officially registering.
For this reason, the OPCW is following “with special attention” the situation of certain facilities, as stated in a statement released this Monday and which coincides with Israel’s confirmation of a bombing of enclaves where there were supposedly chemical weapons and long-range projectiles. scope.
The organization, whose general secretary is the Spanish Fernando Arias, has already contacted the Syrian delegation to convey all these concerns and has offered to collaborate “with the relevant authorities in Syria” and with “international partners” to clarify outstanding doubts and avoid risks.
