The number of injured in a train crash in the Mexican capital rose to 57 this Sunday. The accident occurred on Saturday in the city subway and left one dead.

The mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, told the press that at 9:16 in the morning there was “a collision between two trains that resulted in a crash,” but did not specify what caused it between the stations. La Raza and Potrero on Line 3 of the subway.

According to Sheinbaum, a woman died in the collision and 57 people were injured, some slightly, and were taken to seven hospitals in the city. Four others were trapped in the trains and were later rescued.

The driver of one of the trains was one of those trapped and was in serious condition.

Hours later, the mayor announced that 26 injured had been discharged.

The surroundings of the stations where the crash occurred were taken over by a hundred police and military personnel while ambulances and rescue teams arrived to attend to the injured.

Edgar Montiel, a 28-year-old electrician, one of the train passengers, said he was miraculously saved by getting into the penultimate car at the last moment and not the last one that was crushed in the crash.

“It was heard very loud. I just closed my eyes when I felt that the sheets of the wagon bent and threw me away,” Montiel told the AP when recounting the moment of the collision.

The electrician, who had his left arm and shoulder bandaged, explained that he was left on the floor of the carriage along with several passengers who were screaming and crying for help.

“The power to the subway went out and a lot of smoke began to come out that was suffocating us, we couldn’t breathe well,” Montiel said, adding that all the occupants of the car had to wait for about 30 minutes until the paramedics arrived to help them. and get them out of the wagon.

Lamenting the accident, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on his Twitter account that public officials in Mexico City are attending to the incident and that they have the support of the federal government.
