The general secretary of the non-governmental organization Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), Jan Egeland, warned this Wednesday that we are living in a “dark decade” given the number of people displaced by violence and armed conflicts in the world, which It has probably already exceeded 110 million.
“(This is) due to the explosive nature of conflicts in countries like Burkina Faso and Sudan. Meanwhile, older ones simmer just below the surface and threaten to unleash new waves of displacement and suffering if political action is not taken “, he warned.
In this sense, he has affirmed that neither national nor international leaders manage to prevent both war and violence. “The world watches as the number of displaced people increases and then does very little to protect and help them,” she said.
According to data compiled by the NRC, six in ten displaced persons remain in their country of origin with little or no place to hide and no safe paths to seek humanitarian protection from the violence. In Ethiopia, for example, more than two million people have been internally displaced.
“This failure to protect civilians so they can stay safe in their homes cannot continue. We need peace diplomacy to be reinvigorated, donor countries to increase their financial support to end human suffering, and the stories of the families are counted on the front pages”, has settled.
His words come after the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issued a report on Wednesday stating that during the past year nearly 110 million people were forced to leave their homes because of wars.
According to said report, the year 2022 closed with a total of 108.4 million displaced persons and refugees, a figure 19.1 million higher than that of the previous year, the largest increase in history. The war in Ukraine is one of the main conflicts that has contributed to the increase in the numbers of people who have been forced to flee their places of residence.
