The Nigerian Presidency has denied this Friday that the Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari seeks an interim government a week after the elections, scheduled for February 25, and the recent protests over the shortage of banknotes.
“Rumors about an interim government and the truncation of democracy are misplaced. Those who sell them will gain nothing, nothing at all, except creating panic and inciting the public against the federal government,” he said in a statement. Government spokeswoman Garba Shehu said.
In recent days, Nigeria has experienced violent protests in different cities due to the shortage of cash and gasoline in the country due to the recent implementation of the redesign of the official currency, the naira, as reported by the newspaper ‘Premium Times’.
In this sense, the Presidency has affirmed that “the path to choose”, given the situation of lack of foreign currency”, “is not panic”. “His clear and unequivocal directive (that of the president) is that the problem of the supply of cash must be dealt with without delay”, has been sentenced.
Buhari has approved the creation of a transition team for the transfer of powers after the presidential and legislative elections on February 25, which he will not be able to run after having exhausted the two terms provided for in the Constitution.
