He New Popular Front, France’s coalition of left-wing parties has reached an agreement to propose Lucie Castets, a 64-year-old senior official, as her candidate for prime minister to President Emmanuel Macron.
The four parties that make up the New Popular Front stressed in a statement that Castets is a civil servant who has worked in the fight against tax and financial fraud, as well as a great defender of public services.
This announcement comes 16 days after the early legislative elections that gave a narrow victory to the progressive forces, ahead of the centrist group of the French president, Emmanuel Macronand the far-right National Rally (RN).
Until today, Castets was a relatively unknown name among the French public. At the time of the announcement, his X account, for example, had 11,500 followers.
Shortly after this announcement, Macron announced that will not appoint a prime minister until mid-Augustfollowing the end of the Paris Olympic Games, which end on the 11th of next month.
“Until mid-August we will focus on the Games and then I will appoint a prime minister,” Macron said in a televised interview.
